The USL Season kicks-off this Saturday with Charleston Battery v Toronto FC II. While this will be TFCII’s inaugural match, the Charleston Battery are far from new to the USL. The Battery who were founded in 1993 have been in the league since its initial season in 2011 and are among the strongest finishing fifth with a record of 11W-8D-9L, reaching the playoffs for the fourth straight season. This Saturday will be a strong test for TFCII coming off a preseason that saw them win two matches against University squads, losing an inter-squad match to Toronto FC and against the NASL’s Ottawa Fury FC.
The offensive prowess of Jordan Hamilton, Mark Anthony Kaye, Sal Bernal and Molham Babouli will be facing the USL’s fourth stingiest defenses in 2014 that allowed only 31 goals. Canadian National Team supporters will remember in 2012 how the Cuban National Team had a number of players defect prior to their World Cup Qualifier in October. Three defectors play for the Charleston Battery, one of which is the goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper who has proven to be a key asset to their defensive success. Charleston is also home to midfielder Maikel Chang and forward Heviel Cordoves.
Saturday’s match, and all USL matches, can be seen on YouTube starting at 7:30pm. Be sure to catch all the action as one of the most exciting seasons begins for the USL and Toronto FC II takes its first steps.
