The moment thousands of PDL fans across North America had been waiting for was finally here. The opening day of the PDL saw a slew of matches played and a flurry of results. For TSS FC Rovers, it saw them take on one of the best teams in the west, Calgary Foothills FC.
Being the new kids on the block, TSS had something to prove. And prove they did. 2 minutes into the match, TSS’ Daniel Davidson bagged the team’s first goal in PDL history with a headed effort off a rebound coming from the crossbar.
Two minutes later, the Rovers would double their lead. A costly mistake by Calgary Foothills FC’s Northover saw TSS’ Connor MacMillan off to the races where he slotted home the team’s second goal against a helpless Powley.
However, not all good things last forever. The Rovers suffered a devastating injury when one of the team’s key leaders in Ryan Dhillon went down in the Foothills FC’s box. After being unable to walk off the field, he was substituted for Kristian Yli-Hietanen. The injury has since been confirmed to be ankle related and will see Dhillon out “a couple of weeks” at the very least by head coach Colin Elmes.
Yli-Hietanen gave Foothills FC his welcome by putting away a goal of his own. A beautiful through pass put Yli-Hietanen on a one way path to Goalsville. With only the keeper to beat, Kristian smashed home a resounding shot into the top right corner of the Foothills FC’s net.
However, Calgary would peg TSS back immediately. A penalty opportunity saw Kyle Jones put away the ball in the Rovers net, just before halftime could be called. Sitting on a 3-1 lead, the Rovers only had down to go from there.
And that’s the exact direction they went. Calgary switched the a long passing game and just managed to find the holes in which to catch the Rovers out. A slew of events saw Aleej Sarkaria finding a whole lot of space between him and the nearest defender, and he punished TSS for it, scoring his first of the season and the second for Foothills FC.
In the 80th minute, Calgary Foothills FC found their redemption. Off the back of a penalty call that had a varied reaction, Foothills FC’s Kyle Jones scored his second to tie the game. 10 minutes later, Foothills FC scored the game winner off a header from Ali Musse. The goal would finish Calgary Foothills FC’s comeback, or TSS FC Rovers collapse.
Although not an ideal result, TSS still played insanely well for a team that is only just joining the PDL. Scoring 3 goals in the opening half of your first PDL game definitely sends a statement to the league. TSS is here to play. The team will continue their bout against Calgary on Sunday at 2pm MST or 1pm PST.
