Toronto FC hosted Houston Dynamo on Friday April 28, 2017 at BMO Field in Toronto. This was TFC’s 8th match of the 2017 MLS season. Going into this match the Toronto FC injury list grew this week as defender Chris Mavinga pulled a quad earlier in the week and Jason Hernandez was out due to a calf injury. They join goalkeeper Clint Irwin, full back Ashtone Morgane, and defender Drew Moor on the TFC injury list.
Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney for the first time this season called the same exact squad for 2 consecutive games; he started the following eleven:
TFC looked strong right away in the first minute of play as Edwards picked out Jozy at the far post, but his first touch gets away. Alex Bono is tested early in the match as he stops back-to-back corners in the 4th minute. Toronto FC’s big break came in the 16th minute as Jozy Altidore continues his scoring streak, receiving a pass from Raheem Edwards in the box which went through 20 passes before landing into the back of the net. Jozy would not be done, as in the 32nd minute Jozy received a pass from Sebastian Giovinco making it 2-0. Once again Jozy’s performance this night at BMO demonstrates his worth to the club as a successful DP signing for TFC. While on the topic of successful DP signings, Giovinco almost makes it 3-0 as he hits the post.
At the beginning of the second half, Raheem Edwards sets up nice service for a Giovinco pass, but Seba did not score. Houston Dynamo were relentless and had some opportunities to score. By the 86th minute the Dynamo had 9 corner kicks throughout the match. Also, TFC’s back line were in great form, even with 4 injured TFC defenders they still managed to help Alex Bono keep the clean sheet with a final sore of 2-0.
Toronto FC subs in the game included: Osorio coming on for Delgado in the 70th minute. Armando Copper coming in for Victor Vazquez in the 75th minute and Ricketts coming on for Altidore in the 79th minute.
At the end of the match both TFC players and coach had a lot of positive feedback from this match. TFC Captain Michael Bradley stated that TFC have established BMO field as a hard place for the opposition to play at. Goalkeeper Alex Bono attributes the clean sheet to an 11 man effort. While coach Greg Vanney was simply pleased with this performance.
Toronto FC will host Orlando City on Wednesday May 3 as 2 of the MLS top goalscorers Cyle Larin (6 goals) and Jozy Altidore (5 goals) will look to increase their goal tally for the season.
