Final Score:………..Toronto FC Academy……….2……….ANB Futbol………1……
Attendance was about 75 on this hot and sunny day. There were no water breaks called because
there were enough injuries that players were able to go to the sidelines while trainers were
on the field. Fans were subject to the faint roar of the Riotfest concert in the distance which
blocked access to the west entrance to Downsview Park. I discovered another exit from the
north side after another west entrance that led to the flea market passageway was also blocked
for parking for another event so I barely made it by game time.
The game was rough at times with some close checking. There were three major injuries.
At 9 minutes ANB Patricio Gonzalez was knocked unconcious in a collision in his own box which
was the major reason why the first half had six minutes of added time. The trainers from
both teams worked on him. The ANB trainer said he was still seeing circles at halftime but
he’d be alright. His replacement Daniel Iannacito was himself injured at 22 minutes with
a serious leg injury that had him leave the field after the game on crutches. He was replaced
by the backup goalie putting on an outfielder’s shirt. TFCA Tristan Borges was hurt in the
second half but eventually finished the game.
Referee Alexis Vaughan gave out six cards in the game—four to ANB. She called out one player
on each team from 50 yards away to give them cards at 84 minutes on a delayed call after
being signalled over by an assistant who saw something inside the TFCA box on a freekick.
Both teams were called on a lot of offsides today.
TFCA had more possession and spent longer in the ANB end but ANB used counterattacks for most
of their offence sometimes starting off on 2 v 5 runs. 72 minutes was their best chance
with Jason Mills dribbled through defenders and the goalie and tapped a 10 yarder from the
left side wide right of the open net.
TFCA started at 1 minutes with Martin Davis shooting a 15 yarder from the right that hit
the right post just under the bar. 54 minutes had TFCA Cyrus Rollocks blast a 10 yarder
off the underside of the bar. Two minutes later a TFCA freekick was sent in from 35 yards
and Davis flicked a header at 12 yards that hit the bar then was cleared. 80 minutes had
TFCA Richie Ennin break in on a 4 on 0 rush on the right and shoot wide left from 18 yards
rather than centering a pass. Two minutes later Ennin was pushed a short pass in a crowd
of players and chipped a 15 yard shot over the net. 90 minutes had TFCA Tristan Borges
take a 25 yard freekick down the middle that the goalie punched wide left of the post.
Adonijah Reid who is second in the league with 18 goals at the age of 16 was at the game
in street clothes. He had been injured in ANB’s last league game according to team
official Wayne Mills and NOT in Canada’s U-20s national team training camp two weeks ago.
Felipe Vilela of Oakville Blue Devils leads with 19 goals.
The win improves TFCA’s record to 11 wins, 1 draw, 8 losses for 34 points and seventh
place in the twelve team league. This is their sixth win in a row since the end of July.
ANB’s record falls to 11 wins, 3 draws, 6 losses for 36 points and fifth spot. There are
no playoffs so both teams are just playing for placings. TFCA had travelled to Windsor
on Thursday night (six plus hours drive).
