TFC Academy (PDL) vs K-W United match review

Results and details of the Tuesday May 19, 2015 PDL game between Toronto FC Academy (PDL) and K-W United
played at KIA Training Centre in Downsview at 2:30.

33 min…KW Jarrek Whiteman GOAL…KW Serge Camargo on 2 on 1 rush taps ball to Whiteman who hadn’t
been in play but defender slides to partially stop ball and Whiteman shoots low 10 yard shot over
sliding goalie Darrin McLeod.

Final Score:……Toronto FC Academy (PDL)……..0……K-W United…….1…….

Attendance was about 80 on this cool and very, very cross-field windy day.  Some of the Toronto FC II team were
in the crowd watching guys they would have played with in the Academy in past years.  Jay Chapman
of TFC II played for K-W United as recently as last year.

I came expecting to see a lot of Toronto FC Academy players I watched last year in League 1 Ontario
and that was true but some older Academy players of past years like Jarek Whiteman, Sergio Camargo,
and Dylan Sacramento are stars for the team from Kitchener-Waterloo.

Nathan Ingham earned the shutout for K-W and only had a few stops to make.  K-W looked more
threatening overall for the entire game except for a surge for TFCA in the last 8 minutes.

The game wasn’t rough after all after the first minute when KWU Ridge Robinson was injured
in a collision with the TFCA goalie and had to be subbed out.  Referee Fabrizio Stasolla gave
out only three Yellow cards that I counted (two to KWU).

Almost all the plays that would have been good chances were ruined by cornerkicks and through
ball chips being caught in the wind and blowing out the other side of the box.  Shots sailed
over the net.  The best chances that did work included at 12 minutes when KW Jarek Whiteman
rushed up the right and rolled a pass forward to KW Oyvind Alseth who crossed low from 15 yards
along the end line and KW Dylan Sacramento took an 8 yard shot back towards the fallen goalie
on the right post for him to save instead of the open half of the net.  71 minutes had KW Sacramento
on a 2 on 1 break and he rolled a pass to KW Ben Polk but his 12 yard shot was blocked by a sliding
TFCA Nikola Stakic who was trailing both men.  92 minutes had TFCA Ryan James take a cornerkick
from the right that looked like it would sail over the box but the wind blew it back and
TFCA Nathaniel McAuley headed 8 yarder just wide left of the post.

Chris Pozniak is the new head coach of K-W United.  He replaces Stuart Neely who returns as head coach
of TFC Academy and who also coaches their team in League 1 Ontario.  I watched Pozniak play for
Toronto Lynx when they were in the A-League and later in the MLS with Toronto FC and his transition
into coaching was interrupted because he did work in a bank.  Paul Stalteri from the 1997 edition
of the Lynx was in the crowd watching the game.  Last year I was watching PDL games when Toronto Lynx
were in the league.  This year the Lynx have joined League 1 Ontario as Oakville Blue Devils–a name
the Lynx used for their farm team in the CPSL ten years ago.

This was the first game of the season for K-W United so they go to 1-0-0.  TFC Academy had previously
dropped their weekend road game against Michigan Bucks so now fall to 0-0-2.

Next home game for TFC Academy will be Wednesday May 27th at KIA Training Centre.  Probably no TFC II
players will be watching because they will be on the field for the TFC vs Manchester City friendly
a few hours later at BMO Field.
