Final Score:…….Pro Stars FC…….3……..Windsor Stars……..2…….
Attendance was about 40 with more than that before the game started but many of the children
in the far end stands left when it started to rain at the 3 minute mark. The rain soon stopped
and restarted a few times but never hard enough for me to stop writing. It never seemed
to make the field turf extra slippery. There were no announcements made in the second half
as the game crew protected their audio equipment so it took away the glory of Pro Stars players
hearing their goals announced.
Both teams changed their goalies during the game. Windsor made the switch at halftime with
Sabastien Seke replacing Johnathan Vaughan and Pro Stars subbing Justin Barrett for
Jonathan Albanse at 80 minutes.
Windsor started an U-23 lineup in every position except the goalie. Their coaching staff now wear
the Windsor TFC logos. The team has changed their name to ‘Windsor TFC’ since their partnership
with Toronto FC in July. Their twitter message mentions that today they were using their Academy team.
I’m not sure if that means they won’t use their older players or whether their roster was devastated
by the older players returning to colleges and universities. They might also have thought they were
playing the last place team which had only won two league games this season.
Pro Stars used a lineup that had 14 of their 18 players as U-23s.
Player of the game for me was Pro Stars defender Lucas Marcelic who was a rock in the back with
about six blocks and clearances preventing almost sure goals for Windsor. His head was a magnet
for Windsor cornerkicks with timely headers out of trouble. He got in some sliding tackles that
resulted in throw-ins more often than cornerkicks. He has become a regular starter since coming
as a sub in mid June. He is one of their U-23s.
Referee Jose Sanchez-Larios gave one Yellow card that I counted and that was to a Windsor player for
dissent after an offside call went against them. The game was mostly wide open.
Best non-scoring changes were at 6 minutes when Pro Walter Rymar received a cross from the left and
flicked a 6 yard header wide right of the post. 54 minutes had Pro Philip Balkhe’s cornerkick from the
right find Pro Michael Fayehun head forward from 5 yards and the leaping goalie swatted away from
just under the bar. 57 minutes had Pro Lucas Marcelic made a sliding tackle to block the shot
of WS Nathan Cummings who had run down the right and broken into the box. 59 minutes had Cummings
cross from the right end line and the goalie survived being charged into by a WS player on the left post
when he bent over to pick up the ball and a defender cleared. 88 minutes had Cummings on a 2 on 1
rush up the middle from 40 yards and his 18 yard shot was stopped point blank by the goalie. 90 minutes
had Pro Manny Slewa run up the middle deking a defender to be in alone at 15 yards and his shot
was partially blocked by the sprawling goalie at 7 yards. Pro Balkhe’s follow up shot was wide right
of the post. 92 minutes had Pro Rymar get to a bounce pass and his 15 yard blast had the flying goalie
bat wide left of the net. 93 minutes had WS Celso Carapau given a through ball pass that he rolled
from 12 yards wide left of the post.
The win improves Pro Stars reocrd to 3 wins, 12 losses, 3 ties for 12 points. It pulls them out of the
basement into seventh in the eight team Western Conference. The now last place Sanjaxx lost
one hour earlier at home to TFC Academy.
The loss drops Windsor’s record to 9 wins, 10 losses, 1 tie for 28 points and fifth place in the West.
