Toronto FC continues their early stages of the 2017 MLS season as they travelled to Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia to face Union. Toronto FC Coach Greg Vanney called up the following:
There were a few changes for Toronto FC from the previous match. Victor Vasquez proved himself worthy of a start as he had a great half hour performance against Real Salt Lake. Vazquez was substituted in Osorio in the 60th minute. It was reported on Tuesday that Steven Beitashour missed practice and was being monitored by Toronto FC’s medical team for a possible concussion. The 2016 MLS Super draft pick Tsubasa Endoh (ninth overall that year) had his first start of the season. Benoit Cheyrou did not make the list of Toronto FC subs, but Jay Chapman and Chris Mavinga did.
Toronto FC played once again in a 3-5-2 formation. The Reds began sloppy in the first half, allowing Union to score in the 11th minute in what looked like a defensive error. In the 32nd minute Union were awarded a penalty as Alejandro Bedoya catches the crossbar and is unsuccessful in giving Union a two goal lead. TFC’s struggle continued in the first half as Union defender Oguchi Onyewu injured Sebastian Giovinco in the 43d minute with a hard tackle on his right leg. Giovinco was shortly substituted off for Tosaint Ricketts. Just before the end of the half, TFC were awarded a penalty kick in stoppage time and Jozy Altidore scores the first goal for TFC in the 2017 season.
TFC struggled throughout in the second half, with fouls as Eriq Zavaleta and Armando Cooper both picked up yellow cards from referee Mark Geiger. Justin Morrow would score in the 71st minute making it 2-1 for the Reds, but less then 2 minutes later C.J Sapong would equalize with a left-footed shot from the left side of the six yard box. After a short delay of game due to an injury, Armando Cooper would be substituted off in the 77th minute for Jonathan Osorio. Toronto’s final substitution came in the 85th minute as Chris Mavinga made his TFC debut, replacing Tsubasa Endoh. TFC would end their second game of the season with a 2nd consecutive draw.
Toronto FC will travel to Vancouver on Saturday March 18 2017 to face the Whitecaps at BC Place.
