Final Score:…….Toronto FC II….1…Wilmington Hammerheads…….3……

Attendance was around 750 on this mild evening with people arriving late

maybe waiting until the threat of the thunderstorm warnings had been

 called off.

Referee Pierre Acouri gave out four Yellow cards—three to TFC II but that

included two to Skylar Thomas for pull downs including one for a Penalty

kick. The game was wide open with no viciousness.

Best non-scoring chances were at 32 minutes when TFC Chris Mannella took

a 22 yard freekick from the left edge of the box and the goalie batted

the ball down. TFC Skylar Thomas then shot a 12 yarder that the defenders

were able to block at 4 yards. Two minutes later WH Austin Martz rushed

on the right and crossed into the box from 20 yards and WM Kyle Parker

headed a 10 yarder down the middle that the goalie caught on the right

post. 37 minutes had TFC Mannella take a 30 yard freekick from the right

that was over to TFC Brian James on the left end line and he crossed

to the middle of the box and TFC Shaan Hundal popped up a header that the

goalie turned back towards his net and caught near the left post. 69 minutes

had WH Martz rush forward from 60 yards eluding defenders and as TFC

Mitchell Taintor pushed on him got away a 15 yard shot up middle that

the goalie batted down. WH Jeff Michaud blasted a 10 yard shot from the

left that the goalie stopped on the left post and Taintor then kicked

the ball behind the end line.

I was sitting with what became a cheering section of about 20 family and

relatives for former Toronto resident John Smits who is the goalie

for Wilmington. He started with North Mississauga and was then with

Erin Mills. He was the goaltender for University of Toronto from 2009

to 2011, FC Edmonton of NASL from 2012 to 2015 which included a short

stint with Montreal Impact of MLS in 2015. Before this season he was

signed by the Hammerheads and has played nine games. He took no chances

with some punch aways instead of catch attempts in crowded situations.

This was the second time a visiting team has pulled out a Toronto area

goalie. Gregory Ranjitsingh continues to lead the league with a 0.19

goals against average and a .909 save percentage. He shut out TFC II

when Louisville City came to town May 4th. He worked his way through

 the Sigma FC system.

Two years ago Wilmington were the Toronto FC USL team for getting players

playing time but there never seemed to be more than three at once.

There were also restrictions at certain times to bring players across

the border. It’s so much easier to have the players in the same town

to call up on short notice. TFC II did not have any of their MLS

bring-downs (aka players that wear numbers less than #30) on the

roster today. It appears with injury problems at the big team,

only captain Chris Mannella who’s been marooned here all year

 was in the line up.

Security asked to check my bag. He asked me if I had any sunflower seeds

which must have become a concern as outside food can be brought in.

TFC had lost their previous three road games and now have a four game

losing streak. Their record is now 2 wins, 7 losses, 2 ties for 12th place

out of 14 teams in the Eastern Conference. Wilmington had been only

one point ahead of them but improves to 3 wins, 4 losses, 3 ties.

TFC II next Saturday are away against Charlotte Independence. Their next

home game is here Saturday June 11th against USL defending champions

 Rochester Rhinos at 7:30pm.
