3. Road victory in Seattle
Before the 2014 season, TFC had only ever managed to take away a single point from CenturyLink Field in Seattle. But this was no ordinary TFC squad. The recent additions of Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley, among several others, gave the new Bloody Big Deal Reds the boost they needed. Although they had all only just gotten to know each other, namely Defoe who was still at Tottenham up until shortly before opening day, their abilities were not to be denied.
TFC looked sharp in both attacking and defending and managed to determine the pace of the game. Then came the break through. Jermain Defoe, on a beautiful through ball from Jonathan Osorio, opened his MLS scoring account and gave the Reds a 1-0 lead. But they didn’t stop there. On a terrible back pass by Marco Pappa, Jermain Defoe picked it off and again beat former TFC keeper Stefan Frei to give TFC an unprecedented 2-0 lead before halftime.
As Seattle pressure was building, Clint Dempsey was able to bring the Sounders to within 1 of the visitors. The backline for TFC was able to bend and did not break. The final whistle blew and TFC had their perfect start against a formidable opponent.
